Employment New Zealand is the official source for employment rights. Every employee must have a written employment agreement, and your employer must give you a copy before you start, tell you that you can get independent advice, and give you time to do so.
Minimum wage
From 1 April 2026, the adult minimum wage is $23.95 per hour before tax. The starting-out and training minimum wage is $19.16 per hour. Rates usually change each year, so check the current rate.
Before you pay
Before you start
- Get your IRD number, and give it to your employer with a tax code declaration.
- Read your employment agreement, hours, pay rate, how you’re paid, notice period.
- Check that the work fits the conditions of your visa. If you’re unsure what your visa allows, check Immigration New Zealand’s information or speak with a Licensed Immigration Adviser. Future Lane can’t advise on visa conditions.
Common mistakes
- Starting “trial” work without pay or without a written agreement.
- Accepting cash-only work with no payslip.
- Not keeping copies of payslips and rosters.
