Who to contact
- Emergency (police, fire, ambulance): dial 111.
- Healthline: 0800 611 116, free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for health advice from nurses, paramedics and doctors. Interpreters are available.
- Students: your education provider’s student health service is usually the easiest first stop.
Publicly funded care
Immigration New Zealand says that, in general, people on temporary visas to visit, study or work cannot get publicly funded health care. Some people are eligible depending on their visa and circumstances. If you are eligible, you’ll need to show proof, for example, your eVisa letter.
Insurance for international students
Under the Code of Practice for the pastoral care of international learners, education providers must ensure, as far as practicable, that international students have appropriate insurance. Read your policy so you know what’s covered, medical care, travel, repatriation, and how to claim.
What to do next
- Save 111 and 0800 611 116 in your phone before you fly.
- Find your nearest student health service, doctor (GP) or after-hours clinic in the Explore directory.
- Bring enough of any regular medication for your first weeks, with a letter from your doctor.
Where to check the current rule
Eligibility for publicly funded care depends on your visa. Check the official eligibility information rather than relying on friends’ experiences.
